Exploring The Connection Between Social Work And Politics

By Douglas Walker

When it comes to the field of sociology and political interests, the two are often vastly different. While this is the case, those training to work on electoral campaigns is one area in which this is not the case. For, those whom can lead others with regards to social work and politics are often sought after by a number of partisan and nonpartisan campaigns.

By studying and working in both areas, most individuals find it easier to promote social change while also pursuing political aspirations. While this is the case, there are also advocates on both sides of a campaign which tend to highlight these areas. In fact, recent research in the area has shown that advocates, students and social workers in these areas often make the best politicians.

Students and others running for office, whether at the local, state or federal level often have extremely different platforms. In some cases, the platforms are in line with a political party. In others, a candidate may have a platform which is more non-partisan than associated with a specific party.

Training is available for those considering a run for any of these elected positions. After which, there are generally studies to show how much interest in political engagement an individual gained through such education. In most cases, those whom attended the training appeared far more likely to become active in politics.

In some cases, it can be the work involved when students and others start working on campaigns that causes a loss in interest. Whether as a paid staff member or volunteer, the hours spent working on a campaign can often be long and tiresome. As such, while there are a number of people suited to serve as elected officials, there are also many more whom are just not cut out for this type of work.

Students majoring in sociology may also want to consider taking some classes associated with political science. For, a number of studies have shown that those who have experience in both areas often make the best politicians. For, those whom can promote social justice concerns while also pursuing a political career are often the most successful with regards to both endeavors.

Whether approaching politics as an advocate or case worker, the experiments and studies which have taken place in the area often have a lot to offer. For, while case workers rarely work in politics, there are politicians who actively work with those involved in sociology. At the same time, with the growing trend of mixing political power and sociological factors, it appears things are changing in both areas.

One study involving existing interest in politics looked at subjects working in the area. Whereas, a totally different study focused on students pursuing degrees in political science and sociology. Ultimately, the research showed that in all cases, those majoring in sociology often became more interested in politics than those in other focus groups.
