To become a lawyer one will first need to do a pre-law course. This is for those that are undergraduates and wish to study at any law school. The American Bar Association has laid down laws that each student must at least have a bachelor's degree. Each school of law has their own requirements for admission.
The course involves writing and speaking skills such as communication, theatre, rhetoric and English composition as well as problem solving skills. The problem solving covers philosophy, statistics economics and entrepreneurship. Understanding human behaviour as well as any topic that is related to law will also be covered. Some students will be asked to take an upper level of political science and sociology depending on the institution they are attending.
The undergraduate course normally takes about four years to complete. When that is completed they will then attend Law School and will need to graduate within three years and obtain their Juris Doctorate. For those that are working during the day they can be granted more time to finish their course.
Once each applicant has earned the Juris Doctor degree they are asked to participate in a Law Clerk program. In most of the jurisdictions one is required to pass a Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination. This is a sixty question, one hundred and twenty minute multiple choice exam. It is set by the National Conference of Bar Examiners and was first used in 1980.
Many experienced attorneys are more than willing to speak and sometimes even teach at these conferences as they will receive credit for taking part. At many of the schools that offer law they help to prepare them for the real world by preparing them for mock trials and court arguments. Many even encourage law competitions.
If one is still fairly new in the law business and would still like to become a speaker try speaking to a more senior attorney in the firm so that they can help to build a strong resume in the area of which one would like to speak about. Many of them will even be willing to take on assistants teaching one the ropes, so to speak. Telephoning the organisation and showing them that one is very interested in serving on the panel could also open many doors.
A Master of Law course will need to be completed in three years and if the student would like can apply for an additional year to become a Registrar. This will give one the power to hear civil matters as well as hear trials of different cases. They are assisted by the Deputy Registrars whom are often called masters. The speakers are lawyers that contribute to further educating those who are interested in becoming lawyers themselves. Any new lawyer will need to complete an ethics and professionalism course within a twelve month period before becoming a member.
