What To Know About A Sikh Turban

By Lela Perkins

Sikh turban or turbans are known by different names such as dastar, pagg, and pagri among several others. The names differ depending on the region and language of the people in question. A turbans is mostly associated with Sikhism. Tying a pagri is compulsory among khalsa. Amitdhari and khalsa are the terms used to refer to baptized sikh men. There are many reasons as to why people put on these headgears.

These head covers are based on cloth winding. It is a symbol of piety, honor, courage, self-respect among other many reasons. Members of Khalsa community who serve their communities self-lessly are honored with dastars. They act as a unique identity for various groups. Some special models are worn as part of medication, especially among cancer patients who experience hair loss due to medication. Among desert dwellers, they are worn to keep off dust and sand.

As a sign of duty, the eldest son to a late man is given one. The presentations are done in turban wearing ceremonies. In a dastar ceremony, the eldest son wears a pagg in front of big congregations to imply their acceptance of duties from their dead dads. It is only after this ceremony that a first-born son gains full recognition as the leader of the family.

Pagris equally signify piety and moral values. In some communities around the world, a pagg wearer is taken for a protector of the less unfortunate. During war times, pagg wearing fighters are trusted easily by women as they fight for freedom for all including the weak. They are taken for liberators who are against all injustices.

Pagris come in different styles that can worn by people from both genders. Dastars worn by kids are called patkas or rumal among many other names. Amongst the styles put on by male members is double Patti also referred to as nok. It a big dastar with fewer wraps about the head. Nok is a six-meter material that is cut into two equal parts each measuring 3-meters. The two pieces are the attached to create a double Patti.

Both heavy and light fabric are used to make dastars. Mal mal is the lightest type of pagri that is made of very fine fabric. Rubia is an average weight weave while violes are lightweight weaves. Domalla is a double length pagri of ten or more meters in length. Patka is a square shaped pagg and measures one meter. When it comes to styles, there is no limitation as anybody can invent their own unique styles.

Pagri wearers and non wearers around the world are endangered in one way or another. There are cases when non-wearers become targets for some groups, who either kill or look down upon them. Cases of pagg wearers being deported or denied entry in some countries have been reported. Such countries seem to associate pagri wearers with some terrorist groups, hence their harsh reaction. To neutralize this people need to be educated about dastars to avoid such treatment.

When in need of a Sikh turban there are many online firms that sell them at reasonable prices. They stock pagris of all types, colors and makes. They can be reached through their websites over the internet.
