California Arrest Records Free Copy Online

By Christopher Evans

California arrest records are documents that may contain information about the number of arrests a specific person had. The records will usually have information about the date of the arrest, place where it happened and the violation.

Many people obtain records for personal reference. However, the records can also be used for application of certain licenses. Licenses like acquisition of a gun, driver's license and more may require an updated copy of the record. Companies also ask records from their applicants to know if they have been arrested or not. If you have a clean slate, you can submit the record and up your chances of being hired. Getting a visa or applying for foreign adoption may also require such records to be submitted.

Getting the records of arrests is possible because of the state Public Records Act and the California constitution to access public information. In the case of records of arrests, the California Department of Justice maintains such records.

You don't have to worry about ordinary people getting your record though; the records can only be given to specific people, agencies and companies. It will be easy for you to obtain your own records but you can't just ask if your neighbor was arrested for a specific crime unless if granted by the court. Companies doing background checks on employees and applicants can apply for such records within reason and under oath of confidentiality. Some agencies may easily obtain such records for legal purposes such as the police force and military.

In order to obtain such record, you can visit the Department of Justice. First you need information of the record such as name, type of arrest or subject matter, location and sometimes the date of incident or arrest. It will take about 10 days for the DOJ to find the record. If after 14 days the record can't be found, the DOJ will then give a specific date or timetable of the release of such record. Costs for obtaining records can be as little as 10 cents per page for duplicating the said records. Requesting for records to be encoded, faxed or print will incur costs depending on the county you are in. Usually they will charge full cost if you want your record to be printed.

Sometimes obtaining the arrest record can be time consuming. If you're just looking for information about possible sex offenders, it's now possible to search online databases that offer the service. In fact, it's better to search online because it's updated and fast. You also don't have to leave your home and you can search for information in private. Searching for information about sex offenders in your locality is possible due to the Megan's law.
